If you’re curious about acupuncture but aren’t sure what happens during a first appointment, this may help to explain. Many people come along feeling a mix of interest and uncertainty, especially if they’re new to Chinese Medicine.
Your initial session is designed to give us both the time, space, and information needed to build a safe, effective, and personalised treatment plan. Here’s what usually happens…

If time allows, I will ask you to complete an online health form before you arrive for your first appointment. This may feel like extra admin, but there are some practical and beneficial reasons behind this:

It saves time and helps you get more from your appointment

An initial consultation is longer than a follow-up because there’s a lot to cover. By sharing your medical history, medications, symptoms, and concerns in advance, I can spend more of your in-person appointment finding out more about your health concerns rather than gathering basic information. It means more time for deeper conversation and assessment, and your first treatment.

It supports your safety

To ensure treatment is safe and appropriate, I need to know about any medical conditions, past surgeries, allergies, or medications you’re taking. Certain conditions require modifications, and some medications, such as blood thinners, affect how treatments are carried out. Filling in the form beforehand gives me time to review this information and plan accordingly.

It helps build a holistic picture of your health

Acupuncture doesn’t only focus on one symptom… it looks at the whole person. Questions about digestion, sleep, stress, energy levels, lifestyle, and emotional wellbeing help me to understand the patterns underlying your symptoms. When you complete the form at home, you have time to reflect more clearly than you might in the moment during an in-person consultation.

It makes the consultation more comfortable

Some people find it easier to write about certain health issues rather than discuss them face-to-face. The online form gives you space to think, be honest, and express yourself clearly. This helps ensure nothing important is missed, especially when symptoms are complex or long-standing.

It allows me to prepare a tailored approach

If I can review your information before you arrive, I can begin to identify patterns, consider potential treatment strategies, and prepare questions or assessments I may want to explore further. This makes your first session more focused, efficient, and personalised.

It streamlines practicalities

Administrative details, such as contact information, GP details, medications etc, can be completed online rather than eating into your consultation time. This keeps your session relaxed rather than rushed.

In short…

The online form is a thoughtful part of your care. By completing it, you help me create a safe, effective, and holistic treatment plan before you even arrive. It’s a small step that ensures your first acupuncture appointment is calm, efficient, and as beneficial as possible.

Your first in-person appointment

If you haven’t filled the form in beforehand, your in-person appointment begins with a detailed consultation. This is far more comprehensive than a standard follow-up session because it forms the foundation of your entire treatment. I will ask about your health history, current symptoms, lifestyle, sleep, digestion, energy levels, and emotional wellbeing. This might feel surprising at first – acupuncturists take a holistic view of the body, so every detail helps to create a fuller picture of what’s going on.

If you have filled the form in beforehand, I will go through any further questions I might have and ask you to clarify a few things if they need more discussion.

Traditional Diagnostic Methods

After our conversation, I will carry out a series of diagnostic assessments, which may include:

Pulse diagnosis: Feeling the pulse at three points on each wrist to assess the quality, rhythm, and strength.

Tongue observation: Looking at the colour, shape, and coating of the tongue, which offers insight into internal balance.

Palpation: Gently pressing on different areas of the body to identify patterns of tension, sensitivity, or imbalance.

These techniques help determine the underlying patterns affecting your health – not just the symptoms you’re experiencing.

Creating your personalised treatment plan

Based on the consultation and diagnostic findings, I will explain my assessment and discuss a treatment plan with you. This might include acupuncture, cupping, tuina (massage), moxa (a medicinal herb which I use when appropriate), heat lamp treatment and lifestyle recommendations. You’ll have time to ask questions, understand the approach, and feel confident moving forward.

Your first treatment

In most cases, you’ll receive your first acupuncture treatment during the initial appointment. You’ll be asked to lie comfortably on a treatment couch while very fine, sterile needles are inserted into specific points. People are often surprised by how gentle and relaxing this feels. Some experience a mild tingling, warmth, or heaviness – sensations that indicate the body is responding to treatment.

Relaxation Time

Once the needles are placed, you’ll rest quietly for around 15-20 minutes. This part of the session is often deeply calming, giving your nervous system time to shift into a restorative state. Many people describe feeling peaceful, grounded or refreshed afterwards.

Next steps

Before you leave, I will talk through what to expect after treatment and how many sessions may be beneficial. I can also answer questions about sensations, after-care, and how to measure progress.

If you’re ready to feel more balanced, supported, and in control of your wellbeing, an initial acupuncture appointment is the perfect place to start. Whether you’re seeking relief from pain, stress, or long-standing health issues, acupuncture offers a gentle, effective way forward.
