About Acupuncture

Established in ancient wisdom and supported by modern research, Acupuncture is a natural, holistic therapy which aims to restore equilibrium in both body and mind, promoting overall wellness.

Acupuncture is a core component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and was developed over 2,500 years ago in China.

According to Chinese medicine, when the body’s vital energy, known as Qi (pronounced “chee”), flows smoothly, we experience inner and outer well-being. When that flow becomes blocked or unbalanced, it can lead to pain, illness, or emotional distress. Acupuncture addresses the underlying imbalances in this flow, helping to rebalance and strengthen by activating the body’s natural healing processes.

To do this, specific points on the skin are stimulated, using ultra-fine, sterile, disposable needles. These points are selected based on their functions, and treatment is tailored to meet the individual’s needs.

Acupuncture supports the body’s natural capacity to restore balance by regulating the nervous system, releasing endorphins, and improving circulation - enhancing both physical and emotional well-being.

By activating specific points on the body, acupuncture propels the body’s natural healing response.

It is commonly used to support a wide range of conditions, including (but not limited to):

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Muscle and joint pain

  • Stress, anxiety, and emotional instability

  • Digestive issues

  • Sleep disorders

  • Allergies

  • Menstrual and fertility support

  • Menopausal symptoms

  • Neurological conditions

Whether you’re addressing a specific health issue or looking to enhance your overall well-being, acupuncture offers a gentle, holistic, and effective approach to restoring balance and vitality. It’s also widely used as a preventative therapy, supporting the immune system and promoting long-term health.

Acupuncture treatment

The first step

Acupuncture takes a holistic approach to health, addressing the whole person rather than just isolated symptoms. Your initial appointment includes an in-depth consultation, where your medical history, diet, sleep patterns, emotional well-being and lifestyle are all carefully considered. This detailed synopsis helps to build a clear understanding of your overall health to develop the most effective treatment plan for you. A treatment is usually included during this first session.

Treatments are tailored to meet your current needs, and personalised lifestyle and dietary recommendations may also be discussed to optimise the treatment’s effectiveness between visits.

Follow-up appointments begin with a brief check-in to review your progress and discuss any changes in your symptoms, lifestyle or wellbeing since your last visit.

The number of treatments required will vary depending on your condition, its severity and how your body responds to treatment. Some people will notice an improvement after one or two sessions, whereas others may require a series of treatments over several weeks. In general, acute issues often resolve more quickly, whilst chronic conditions may benefit from longer-term support.

Drawing on my skills and experience in multiple healing modalities, I may incorporate complementary techniques into your session alongside acupuncture. These can include therapeutic massage, moxibustion (moxa), cupping therapy, or gua sha, allowing for a more personalised and effective treatment tailored to your specific needs. I may also recommend stretching or strengthening exercises if appropriate.

Acupuncture FAQs

What does acupuncture feel like?

Most people experience minimal discomfort when the needles are inserted. The sensation can vary – some feel a slight tingling, a dull ache, or a sense of warmth at the site. Many patients find treatments extremely relaxing.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes. When performed by a fully qualified and registered practitioner, acupuncture is a very safe treatment. Sterile, single-use needles are always used and treatment is customised to your individual needs. Make sure you seek treatment from a practitioner who is fully qualified and recognised by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care (PSA).

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on the condition being treated, how long you’ve had it and how your body responds. Some people notice improvement after one or two sessions, whilst others may benefit from a course of treatments.

Can acupuncture help with stress or anxiety?

Acupuncture is well known for its calming effects on the nervous system and is often used to support people dealing with stress, anxiety and mood disorders.

Do you accept health insurance?

Yes. Cath is recognised by most major health insurers, including AXA and Aviva. However, please check with your insurance provider before making an appointment.

What should I wear to an appointment?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing as many acupuncture points are on the forearms and lower legs. But depending on the treatment, you may be asked to remove clothing to access other acupuncture points. You will always be properly draped and made comfortable with a gown or towel.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are rare but can include mild bruising, light-headedness, or temporary soreness at the needle site. These usually pass quickly.

What else do I need to know?

Please avoid arriving for your appointment on an empty stomach and stay hydrated before and after your treatment.

If possible, try to schedule your appointment on a day when you’re not too busy. Try to arrive without rushing and give yourself time to rest afterwards.

Refrain from drinking alcohol on the day of treatment and keep any caffeine intake to a minimum.

If you have any questions before or after treatment, please ask!
